We’ve got a new project at work.
It’s really cool and we want it to have a secret project name that sounds awesome and makes us feel important by talking about something no-one else knows about.
But what do you do when you haven’t got any kind of naming convention of projects? Get one quick because revision 641 of the development branch sounds pretty naff whilst Project Apocalypse sounds awesome!
In the past Microsoft have had some great names for projects – “Sparta” for Windows for Workgroups and “Wolfpack” for Microsoft Cluster Server are a couple of the best whilst Apple have free roam over the big cats. I’ve had all sorts for my computers in the past - planets, constellations (good job I only had 2 computers as I don’t know many constellations), beer, ancient forgotten cities, the list goes on..
So to try and get past this issue – and it’s a big issue that’s been the talk of the office for the last day or so, we came up with a few ideas of naming conventions:
Biscuits: Yes you heard right. Biscuits. Do I need to say anything other than “Project Jammy Dodger”. Canned.- Computer Games: Not a bad idea, but “Project Jet Set Willy” is a bit silly so .. Canned.
- Comic Book Villains: Hmmm.. Project Joker has a ring to it but Project Green Goblin doesn’t. Canned.
- Elements: Project Titanium yes, Project Copper no. Unless it’s a software security project. Canned.
- Birds of Prey: The early front runner. Project Eagle, Project Vulture or Project Hawk are all ace. Project Owl? Semi-canned.
- Rivers, Mountains, Countries, Cities: All been done to death so canned.
But I’ve thought of one that’s not on the list that will trump them all. My project naming convention of choice is.. wait for it .. wait for it .. curries.
I want to be a part of Project Vindaloo and I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t! Project Madras? Sign me up!
I think I’ve cracked it but would like to hear any other suggestions for naming conventions be it projects, computers networks or whatever, just leave a comment and maybe it’ll help to inspire us!

As a complete outsider, my impartial opinion is that curries is the best so far. And the hotter the curry for the cooler the project. Like this project can be project vindallo, but something really boring can be project korma, or project egg fried rice.
I still insist on comic book villians.
Metals are lame – Google Chrome, Titanium App, Carbon (it’s not a metal but still…)
“Project Venom” sounds awesome
Project Venom does sound cool as does Project Magneto.
But seriously, would you be happy working on “Project Lex Luthor”?
Sure
After our discussions today – curries are the best
To update :- curries have indeed been chosen and Project Balti is nearing completion!
In addition, whenever a project is finished, we must eat the curry the project is named after, result!
I’m well up for a bit of Project Phaal, so long as there was a Project Cucumber Raiata running at the same time. What’s the bet that no-one turns up the morning after the launch of Project Jalfrezi tho
How about not using the word “Project” at all so nobody even knows it’s a project?
*strokes wise bearded face*
My current “project” name is Fungleduck.
Yep, honest, seriously, true.
What the hell is Fungleduck about? Can you tell me, or would you have to kill me then? :-S
You guys have far more interesting projects to work on than I do!!
Can Project Empty Dishwasher, Project Mow The Lawn or Project Paint The Garden Chairs, Fence and Decking be made to sound cooler at least?
Ceri I have to disagree. A project remotely linked to programming will not be interesting regardless of the name. It could be called Project THOR or DOOM or anything like that but it’s still, well, there is no positive way for this sentence to end!
Project Domestic God(ess?) floats my boat more than 64bit Ipod Googlebits.
I expect this message to be rejected or a plague of trojan horses to beat down my door.
